Connecting Globally to Act Locally

The California Global Biodiversity Alliance (CalGBA) activates collective action by building coalitions and promoting collaboration among local, state, national, tribal, and global biodiversity leaders in California, the United States, and around the world in order to overcome critical biodiversity and climate change challenges.

In California and across the United States, CalGBA partners to mainstream and integrate biodiversity objectives in policies and planning at all levels of decision-making and governance.

CalGBA collaborates with Californians, global NGOs, and subnational governments to engage with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the baseline for a rights-based approach for healthy people and planet.

    Join a CalGBA Committee on COP17 or Workshops

    CalGBA members are participating in two committees to plan our work through COP17 next October 2026. These include our COP17 Planning Group for our engagement in and partnerships for the COP and our Workshops Committee to design our member engagements leading up to COP17.

  • Training: Submitting Subnational and Local Case Studies on KMGBF Implementation

    This training teaches subnational/local governments, NGOs, and community groups to collect and write concise case studies on implementing the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

    Participants learn criteria for strong case studies, project selection, necessary data/evidence, and clear writing for global reporting. The session also covers tools for submitting KMGBF case studies.

  • UNCBD SBSTTA 28 in Nairobi

  • World Biodiversity Forum

    Under the theme of Leading Transformation Together, the fourth edition of the World Biodiversity Forum will convening the community to build broad and strong leadership and networks for transformation, bringing science, arts, society, and businesses together, across generations.

    CalGBA will be speaking on the opening panel of the Forum.

  • California & Massachusetts Join IUCN

    CA and MA have officially joined the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) — making history as the first U.S. states to become IUCN Members. They join a growing movement of subnational governments stepping up to protect and restore biodiversity at the local level, with global impact.

    As we head toward COP17 in Yerevan this October, moments like this matter. They show that states and subnational governments aren't waiting on federal leadership — they're building it.
